Guidelines for Current Event Reports
You MUST find a recent (last two – three weeks) article that meets the following guidelines.
1. Find a news article that interests you.
Students need to find a current article in a newspaper, magazine or on-line news source. Students are encouraged to use a variety of sources during the year.
Articles should not be too short. An article with just a few paragraphs, an internet blurb, or the back page weather report with just pictures and temperatures are all considered inappropriate for this assignment.
*** NO sports, entertainment, editorials, local or state articles.***
What types of news are acceptable?
1. Geography: Environment, Immigration, etc. as it relates to humans.
2. Culture: Customs, traditions, religion and politics, etc.
3. Government: Elections, laws, court decisions, etc.
4. Technology: New inventions, innovative ways to better our lives, etc.
5. Cooperation & Conflict: Foreign policy, economics, trade agreements and disputes, wars, etc.
6. Resources: Natural or human resource issues between governments or groups.
7. History/Archeology: New discoveries or theories about the past (fossil finds, etc.)
2. Copy the article if it is from an online source or cut it out of the newspaper / magazine.
3. Read the article thoroughly looking for ”who, what, when, where, why, and how”.
Read the article to make sure you understand what it is talking about. Take
time to talk about the article with someone at home as this is a good way to make sure you understand clearly what the article is saying.
If you don’t understand what the article you selected is about- choose a different one.
4. Complete the Current Event Report Form
5. Attach the article or a copy of the article to the writing assignment.
